    Supersymmetric Matrix model on Z-orbifold

    We find that the IIA Matrix models defined on the non-compact C3/Z6C^3/Z_6, C2/Z2C^2/Z_2 and C2/Z4C^2/Z_4 orbifolds preserve supersymmetry where the fermions are on-mass-shell Majorana-Weyl fermions. In these examples supersymmetry is preserved both in the orbifolded space and in the non-orbifolded space at the same time. The Matrix model on C3/Z6C^3/Z_6 orbifold has the same N=2{\cal N}=2 supersymmetry as the case of C3/Z3C^3/Z_3 orbifold which was pointed out previously. On the other hand the Matrix models on C2/Z2C^2/Z_2 and C2/Z4C^2/Z_4 orbifold have a half of the N=2{\cal N}=2 supersymmetry. We further find that the Matrix model on C2/Z2C^2/Z_2 orbifold with a parity-like identification preserves N=2{\cal N}=2 supersymmetry.Comment: 21 pages, no figur

    Random Surfaces in Three-Dimensional Simplicial Gravity

    A model of simplicial quantum gravity in three dimensions is investigated numerically based on the technique of the dynamical triangulation (DT). We are concerned with the surfaces appearing on boundaries (i.e., sections) of three-dimensional DT manifold with S3S^{3} topology.     Boundary States, Extended Symmetry Algebra and Module Structure for certain Rational Torus Models

    The massless bosonic field compactified on the circle of rational R2R^2 is reexamined in the presense of boundaries. A particular class of models corresponding to R2=12kR^2=\frac{1}{2k} is distinguished by demanding the existence of a consistent set of Newmann boundary states. The boundary states are constructed explicitly for these models and the fusion rules are derived from them. These are the ones prescribed by the Verlinde formula from the S-matrix of the theory. In addition, the extended symmetry algebra of these theories is constructed which is responsible for the rationality of these theories. Finally, the chiral space of these models is shown to split into a direct sum of irreducible modules of the extended symmetry algebra.Comment: 12 page

    Common Structures in Simplicial Quantum Gravity

    The statistical properties of dynamically triangulated manifolds (DT mfds) in terms of the geodesic distance have been studied numerically. The string susceptibility exponents for the boundary surfaces in three-dimensional DT mfds were measured numerically. For spherical boundary surfaces, we obtained a result consistent with the case of a two-dimensional spherical DT surface described by the matrix model. This gives a correct method to reconstruct two-dimensional random surfaces from three-dimensional DT mfds. Furthermore, a scaling property of the volume distribution of minimum neck baby universes was investigated numerically in the case of three and four dimensions, and we obtain a common scaling structure near to the critical points belonging to the strong coupling phase in both dimensions.     Static dielectric response and Born effective charge of BN nanotubes from {\it ab initio} finite electric field calculations

    {\it Ab initio} investigations of the full static dielectric response and Born effective charge of BN nanotubes (BN-NTs) have been performed for the first time using finite electric field method. It is found that the ionic contribution to the static dielectric response of BN-NTs is substantial and also that a pronounced chirality-dependent oscillation is superimposed on the otherwise linear relation between the longitudinal electric polarizability and the tube diameter (DD), as for a thin dielectric cylinderical shell. In contrast, the transverse dielectric response of the BN-NTs resemble the behavior of a thin (non-ideal) conducting cylindrical shell of a diameter of D+4D+4\AA , with a screening factor of 2 for the inner electric field. The medium principal component ZyZ_y^* of the Born effective charge corresponding to the transverse atomic displacement tangential to the BN-NT surface, has a pronounced DD-dependence (but independent of chirality), while the large longitudinal component ZzZ_z^* exhibits a clear chirality dependence (but nearly DD-independent), suggesting a powerful way to characterize the diameter and chirality of a BN-NT.Comment: submitted to PR

    Light-cone Gauge NSR Strings in Noncritical Dimensions

    Light-cone gauge NSR string theory in noncritical dimensions should correspond to a string theory with a nonstandard longitudinal part. Supersymmetrizing the bosonic case [arXiv:0909.4675], we formulate a superconformal worldsheet theory for the longitudinal variables X^{\pm}, \psi^{\pm}. We show that with the transverse variables and the ghosts combined, it is possible to construct a nilpotent BRST charge.Comment: 22 pages, 1 figur
